The ball is quite literally in Rockstar Games' court as far as bringing Grand Theft Auto VI to a Nintendo platform goes after Nintendo's president just gave the most direct official word yet on whether the next Grand Theft Auto is coming to the Switch 2. The answer is a careful maybe. In a new Variety interview, Nintendo of America chief Devon Pritchard confirmed the console has the power to run the M-rated GTA 6 but declined to say whether it will, saying that it's up to Rockstar to make it happen.

Asked whether the Switch 2 tent is big enough to hold a game like GTA 6, she acknowledged the hardware is capable, then passed the question to Take-Two Interactive. "That's going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time," she said.

A flat "our platform is not for that" would have shut the door. Instead, Nintendo's top US executive put on record that there's enough power under the Switch 2's hood to turn it into a business conversation. For a port that skeptics have long called impossible, "it is up to Rockstar" is opens the door to the possibilities of an eventual port of GTA 6 and maybe even Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2 as well.

To be fair, her confidence in the Nintendo Switch 2 isn't necessarily out of place. This fall, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 comes to Switch 2, the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console in more than a decade, which Nintendo holds up as proof the system can run big, fast, mature third-party action. If an annual shooter of that scale fits, it becomes harder to argue against a GTA 6 port. Pritchard's own thoughts prove this. "We're just at the beginning of seeing what Nintendo Switch 2 can do," she said of a system that has sold more than 23 million units since June 2025.

There is a layer of irony in the same interview. Pritchard describes the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as the one high-profile game "brave enough" to go up against GTA 6's November launch window, which SNL recently turned into a sketch. Nintendo is competing with a game while leaving the door open to one day selling said game on their own console.

None of this confirms anything. There is still no announced Switch 2 version of GTA 6. Rockstar has said nothing about one. The studio has a long history of bringing its games to Nintendo hardware late if at all, while the M-rated content and sheer technical weight of GTA 6 remain real obstacles.

There's a reason why Rockstar's biggest modern games have skipped Nintendo hardware entirely and why GTA 6 is set to join them.

Rockstar's biggest games keep skipping Nintendo

Series
Mainline titles never released on a Nintendo console
Grand Theft Auto

GTA IV, GTA V and GTA 6 (PS5 and Xbox Series only)

Red Dead

Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption 2

Max Payne

Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 3

Midnight Club

All four entries, from Street Racing to Los Angeles

Other

Manhunt, The Warriors, Oni and Wild Metal

Older and remastered Rockstar titles have reached Nintendo, but its modern flagships have not.

Pritchard's comments move the conversation without settling it. The last time the Switch 2 question flared up it was fans and analysts doing the speculating. Now it is Nintendo of America's president saying the console can handle the biggest game of the year and that the next move belongs to Rockstar.

When GTA 6 arrives on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox, a Switch 2 version will not be there, but for the first time, the company that makes the console is not treating the idea as unthinkable.
