The actor behind one of gaming's most memorable characters wants to put years of speculation to rest.
Steven Ogg, who brought the unhinged Trevor Philips to life in Grand Theft Auto 5, recently with Shawn Fonteno and Ned Luke at Comic Con Brussels on May 11 where he, once again, tackled the persistent rumors that have followed him since the game's massive success.
When asked if he doesn't like it when fans recognize him for his role as Trevor Philips in the 2013 title, Ogg clarified that it "doesn't bother" him at all, even joking that he's starting to look more like Philips the older he gets.
Although he did clarify that he doesn't get it when people call an actor the name of the character they played, Ogg went on to praise Philips and GTA 5, saying that it's a "great f*cking video game."
For years, online forums and social media have believed baseless claims that Ogg despises both the character of Trevor and the game that made him a household name among gamers. These rumors gained so much traction that they became accepted as fact.
The truth, as Ogg has already explained many times, is far less dramatic than the internet would have you believe.
What started as simple observations about fans calling him by his character's name instead of his own somehow morphed into a story about resentment and hatred.
This misunderstanding has plagued Ogg for years, especially considering that GTA 5, and Grand Theft Auto, as a whole, is one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.
Perhaps adding fuel to the speculation fire is Ogg's admission that he's not particularly interested in video games.
For an industry where many voice actors are passionate gamers themselves, this might seem unusual, but it hardly translates to hatred for the medium or his role in it.
The persistence of these rumors becomes even more baffling when you consider Ogg's continued involvement with the series.
Far from distancing himself from Trevor and the franchise, the actor regularly participates in comic convention panels alongside his GTA 5 co-stars. Like, for example, Comic Con Brussels.
In case you've already forgotten, Ned Luke plays Michael De Santa while Shawn Fonteno is the actor behind Franklin Clinton.
These appearances, including times where he talks about the canceled DLC for Trevor, among other things, paint a picture of someone who appreciates the impact the role has had on his career rather than resenting it.
Looking ahead, Ogg has confirmed previously that he isn't returning for Grand Theft Auto 6 although he certainly does have colorful ideas about what should happen if this changes.
While he may not be a gamer himself, he clearly understands and respects the impact his performance has had on millions of players worldwide. And despite what the internet rumors might suggest, that's hardly the attitude of someone who hates what they've created.
