Rockstar's award-winning open-world western from 2018 has sold more copies than GTA V in the United States.
Grand Theft Auto V and its successor, Grand Theft Auto VI, are easily the two most talked about games of the past decade, but did you know that a different Rockstar Games outsold pretty much every other game for the past 7 years?
According to Take-Two Interactive, the best-selling game of the past 7 years isn't a Grand Theft Auto title. Instead it's Red Dead Redemption 2.
Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two, cited industry analyst group, Circana, in its latest earnings call, saying that Red Dead Redemption 2 is "the best-selling title of the past 7 years in the US based on dollar sales."
In total, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 74 million copies since it first launched in 2018, making up over half of the total sales of the Red Dead franchise, which is currently up to 92 million units sold to date across three titles.
It's an amazing feat considering that, since Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, Rockstar has re-released GTA V as both Grand Theft Auto V Expanded and Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced.
It only speaks to how much impact Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to make even if it isn't as talked about as much as Rockstar's "other" flagship franchise.
Then again, it's easy to forget that Rockstar initially had grander plans for Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly Red Dead Online. After the success of Grand Theft Auto Online, the developers launched an online component to the award-winning title.
Unfortunately, unlike GTA Online, Red Dead Online didn't take off as planned. As a result, Rockstar effectively abandoned it in July 2022, putting the game on the backburner as it focused its efforts towards supporting GTA Online.
It remains unclear why Red Dead isn't as talked about as GTA even though the numbers tell a different story.
But what's apparent is that Red Dead is too big of a franchise for Rockstar to set aside. Given the way that Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to sell, we're bound to see a fourth entry in the franchise, perhaps in time for the tenth generation of video game consoles.
For now though, the closest thing to a new Red Dead entry is probably a re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
Given that Rockstar didn't name the one re-release they have planned for this fiscal year, there's a chance it might not be related to Grand Theft Auto IV but Red Dead Redemption 2.
Speaking of Take-Two, the company's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, is fresh off his media rounds where he hyped GTA 6, confirming that the game will no longer be delayed and saying that it will be "greater than any previous Rockstar title."
The long-time video game executive also earned himself internet points by revealing his preferred method of being the boss.
