Microsoft is planning releases in four of its biggest franchises in 2026, but according to The Verge's Tom Warren, the trillion-dollar company is treating Grand Theft Auto VI and its November 19 launch date like a no-go zone. They're strategically positioning each of the releases to avoid direct competition with the next Grand Theft Auto, which reinforces the earlier leaks about companies avoiding GTA 6 like the plague, or in the words of certain industry insiders, a "meteor".
If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about the gravitational pull of GTA 6, we don't know what will. That said, Microsoft is reportedly holding weekly meetings to monitor the ongoing situation and is ready to shift dates at a moment's notice. At the moment, the "confirmed" dates for their upcoming titles are:
- Forza Horizon 6 - May 19
- Halo Campaign Evolved - Summer 2026
- Fable - Sometime before Fall 2026
- Gears of War: E-Day - Sometime before Fall 2026
This isn't paranoia - it's pretty much the smartest thing that Microsoft has done recently. It also shows Microsoft learning from the humbling it received when Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013 and generated a billion dollars within three days. Games that launched near it saw their sales decimated. GTA V erased the competition from the conversation entirely, and that was thirteen years ago.
Today, GTA V is the second-best-selling video game of all time, and GTA 6 is expected to sell even more in less time, which is before considering whatever multiplayer component Rockstar eventually launches. If you're Microsoft, looking at those numbers and thinking "yeah, we should release Fable two weeks before GTA 6 drops," you're either incredibly brave or not right in the head.
This situation is particularly sensitive for Microsoft. 2026 is a crucial turning point for the Xbox brand. After years of criticism about lacking exclusive games and watching PlayStation dominate the console market, Microsoft needs these four titles to land perfectly. Releasing any of them during the GTA 6 launch window would throw away hundreds of millions in potential revenue and further damage Xbox's already fragile market position.
The irony here is that Microsoft is juggling an unprecedented number of major releases in a single year, and they're doing it while desperately trying to avoid a game published by a completely different company on completely different platforms. That right there is the reality of GTA 6. Even the biggest companies with the deepest pockets have to bow to Rockstar's release schedule.
For what it's worth, Microsoft isn't the only publisher scrambling to avoid November. Multiple sources told Bloomberg's Jason Schreier that the entire industry has been playing "a massive game of 4D chess" around GTA 6's release date for a while, with publishers prepared to reschedule their own games the moment Rockstar announces a date. Some have already done exactly that, quietly shuffling their 2026 calendars after Rockstar confirmed November 19 during Take-Two's Q3 FY2026 earnings call.
For the fans, this means you'll likely get Forza Horizon 6 in May, Halo: Campaign Evolved sometime over the summer, and Fable and Gears of War: E-Day probably in September or October at the latest. Then, come November 19, none of that will matter because everyone will be playing GTA 6 instead.
