In the same week that many are expecting Rockstar Games to start, at the very least, dripfeeding more Grand Theft Auto 6 news, Sony addressed the elephant in the room. On April 27, 2026, the world's leading console manufacturer announced that the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation Portal will receive price increases across six Southeast Asian markets effective May 1.

The affected countries are Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The increases follow identical hikes that took effect in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan on April 2. With the price increase, the cost of playing the next Grand Theft Auto went up by as much as two weeks' worth of wages for those gamers who can least afford it.

Here is the full pricing breakdown across every affected Southeast Asian market:

Sony announced on X that it is rolling out price increases across every territory in waves, starting with the largest markets (US, UK, Europe, Japan). South Korea, India, Brazil, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are the only territories left unaffected, but not for long. The question is when, and whether, these increases land before or after GTA 6 launches on November 19.

This matters for GTA 6 specifically because the game is expected to be the single largest driver of PS5 hardware sales in the console's lifecycle. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has said he believes every adult will want to play GTA 6. Rockstar has spent considerable time, money, and effort building marketing infrastructure in underserved markets to expand the game's commercial footprint. The leaked ShinyHunters data also showed that Brazil, Mexico, and Southeast Asian markets weren't part of the top 10 Grand Theft Auto Online revenue list, precisely because those players aren't spending as much compared to their Western counterparts.

Raising the price of the hardware required to play the game in those exact markets, months before the game launches, directly undermines this. Every potential GTA 6 player saving up for a PS5 will now have to spend even more. Those who can't afford the new price are lost revenue for Sony and Rockstar.

Sony needs to exercise caution with these price increases. PlayStation console sales collapsed in Japan following the April 2 price hike. In Southeast Asia, a more price-sensitive market where mobile gaming dominates and console gaming is a smaller, the risk of pushing potential buyers toward Xbox, PC, or simply waiting is real. If Sony prices the PS5 out of reach for Southeast Asian buyers, those buyers simply go somewhere else.

Sure, Rockstar can still sell the game to everyone who already owns a PS5, but the pool of new console buyers waiting for GTA 6 as their reason to invest in the hardware just got meaningfully smaller in six countries, with more countries almost certainly following sooner rather than later. The price increases are not going to stop. South Korea, India, Brazil, and the Middle East are next.

If you are in one of those markets and you were planning to buy a PS5 for GTA 6, you'll want to do it now.
