FiveM servers will officially support GTA 5's PC upgrade once it's released on March 4.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is like the gift that keeps on giving. After getting enhanced security features via the BattleEye update last year, Rockstar Games revealed and finally confirmed that the features previously exclusive to Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X are coming to PC. However, the upgrade goes beyond just enhancing the base game and its multiplayer component.

Shortly after the official announcement, Cfx-re confirmed that their servers will also support the upcoming PC upgrade. Rockstar's acquisition of Cfx.re in August 2023 raised questions about the future of FiveM, especially as it has historically had a divisive stance against the modding acommunity as evidenced by its recent takedowns Liberty City Preservation Project and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Next-Gen Edition, but this announcement demonstrates the company's commitment to supporting modders.

However, the transition to the upgraded version comes with some important considerations. Cfx.re advises server owners to maintain their current game version until the upgrade becomes available.

While upgrading to the new version of GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online is optional, it's important to note that it will divide online players. Players who choose to stick with the original version won't be able to join online sessions with those who have upgraded to the next-gen PC version and vice versa.

This separation extends to FiveM servers as well, with Cfx.re confirming that cross-play between different server versions will not be possible. The decision to keep server upgrades optional gives server owners flexibility in managing their communities. However, it also means GTA Online will likely see a shift as players and communities decide whether to embrace the new features or maintain their current setups.

With that said, this much-anticipated upgrade to GTA 5 represents a long-awaited opportunity to experience the 2013 title with all the bells and whistles that previously reserved for next-generation consoles. The free nature of the upgrade is a generous move by Rockstar, allowing all players to access these improvements without additional cost.

FiveM's decision to support the upgrade also shows a recognition of the vital role that community-created content play in the future of Grand Theft Auto, which is particularly important considering the recent controversies and the developer's rumored plans to double down on such content in Grand Theft Auto 6.
