The mod uses Xbox assets to surpass the original versions in quality.
Very few things in life are guaranteed. One of them is that modders will always find a way to mod a Grand Theft Auto game even if it isn't technically meant to exist.
Case in point, the Grand Theft Auto III Sega Dreamcast port.
The developers, Forgbull, Falco Girgis, and Stafenos, have been hard at work improving the gameplay of GTA 3 on the Sega Dreamcast after its initial release earlier this year. So much so that they've already begun porting Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the same platform. But that's not all. It appears modders have also begun supporting the unlikely release.
According to the game's lead developer on X, the mod, specifically released for the Sega Dreamcast version of the Grand Theft Auto game uses assets from the Xbox version adds custom textures and models to make the game look better compared to its original PlayStation 2 and PC ports.
TLDR; the Sega Dreamcast port of GTA 3 is currently the best way to enjoy Liberty City outside of playing Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
What's perhaps more surprising about the mod for the unlikely GTA 3 port is that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive are allowing this passion project to exist.
Over the past few months, Take-Two and Rockstar have strained their already tenuous relationship with modders after taking down fan-favorite projects like the Liberty City Preservation Project, GTA Vice City: Next-Gen Edition, and this recreation of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map in Grand Theft Auto V.
So, it's nice to see that this project still hasn't gotten the dreaded DMCA notice yet.
In other GTA news, PC Game Pass subscribers can now use FiveM when playing Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced and Grand Theft Auto Online.
