Grand Theft Auto Online has been used previously as a vehicle to build hype for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 and, based on data found in the game files of the recently released After Hours DLC, it looks like it will be once more.
You should keep your eyes peeled for this even being triggered in-game soon.
Discovered by data miners who go by the online handles TGFGuru, TheMagixian and tehGramz, the new cross-promotion will be similar to the scavenger hunt that was introduced some months ago.

That particular event saw players hunting for clues across the GTA Online map in order to find a gold-plated Double Action Revolver weapon.
Once players acquired the weapon, they could undertake a headshot challenge which, when completed, unlocked an exclusive weapon skin to be used in Red Dead Redemption 2's multiplayer mode, Red Dead Online, if the player links the same Social Club account to it.
The promotion, by virtue of its reward, confirmed that weapon skins will appear in Red Dead Online.
Turning to the just-discovered upcoming promotion, it appears it will operate in a similar vein. However instead of unlocking a weapon skin in Red Dead Online, you'll get an entire exclusive weapon instead.
Once the mission is activated in GTA Online, the player character will be called by Maude Eccles, a character who you may be familiar with from story mode (she's a Stranger/Freak that lives in Sandy Shores). Maude will give you five bounty targets, similar to those she gives to Trevor in single player.
When you've completed the bounty missions for her, she will reward you with the location of a new exclusive weapon, the Stone Hatchet. Acquiring the weapon in GTA Online ends here, however as it was with the revolver, to actually unlock it in Red Dead Online you still need to complete a challenge.
The Stone Hatchet unlocks the Rampage challenge, which ties into its special ability - we'll get to that in a moment - and requires you to score 25 kills with it.
It doesn't have to be other players, or even hostile NPCs, it can be random PEDs too, which more or less removes any challenge from this "challenge". However, upon getting kill #25 you unlock the hatchet for use in Red Dead Online.
The Stone Hatchet has a special ability that affects the player when using it.
In a nod back to the Rampage game-mode found in 2D and earlier 3D era GTA games, the Rampage ability gives you damage reduction and a buff to health regeneration. It is activated and kept active by racking up kills with the hatchet. It's not known whether the buffs increase the more you kill or simply increase in duration, but chances are we'll find out soon enough.
This promotion and further content will be coming to GTA Online soon and of course we'll let you know when!
