Grand Theft Auto VI puts a couple at the centre of its crime story. Lucia Caminos wants the better life her mother dreamed of, while Jason Duval is looking for an escape from his work for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Together, they must depend on each other to survive a conspiracy across Leonida.1

Official story setup

Rockstar Games has revealed the central setup through GTA VI Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and the game's official character material. Jason wants an easier life after growing up around criminals, serving in the Army and working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Lucia has recently left Leonida Penitentiary and is determined to improve her circumstances through a plan of her own.2

Rockstar has not explained what the failed score involves, who controls the wider conspiracy, or how the story ultimately develops.

Lucia and Jason

Lucia and Jason are the game's two protagonists. Rockstar presents their partnership as both personal and practical: Lucia sees a life with Jason as a possible way forward, while Jason recognizes that meeting Lucia could change his life for better or worse.

Narrative lead Rupert Humphries describes the story as a Bonnie and Clyde-style tale. Their romance is part of the central conflict, not just a subplot around the robberies.3

Their shared story differs from the three-protagonist structure of Grand Theft Auto V, which alternates among Michael, Franklin and Trevor. You can play together as the couple or go off independently. During a shared job, switching can move you from driving to the passenger seat, where the other character can use their phone or shoot at pursuers.3 Their relationship develops separately from the Criminal Profile system. Spending time together, exchanging messages and completing shared jobs can strengthen their bond, while the romance itself remains optional.4

Setting

The conspiracy stretches across Leonida, including modern-day Vice City and other named regions around the state. The trailers show urban, coastal, rural and wetland environments, but Rockstar has not published a complete mission list or confirmed how much of the map the main story will use.

What remains unconfirmed

Rockstar has not confirmed:

  • The complete mission order or story length.
  • Whether player choices alter the ending.
  • The identities of the conspiracy's principal antagonists.
  • The final outcome of Lucia and Jason's partnership.

Claims beyond those boundaries remain reports, interpretations or speculation rather than confirmed plot facts.
