The tropical heist island is now crawling with musket-wielding undead conquistadors and creatures called "Splitters" - here's why GTA Online players are rushing to survive before September 10.
The tropical drug paradise of Cayo Perico has taken a bizarre turn in Grand Theft Auto Online's latest update. The island known for its high-stakes heists is now crawling with the undead, turning what was already a dangerous destination into something far more chaotic.
The new Cayo Perico Survival mode throws players into waves of zombie combat against some truly strange enemies. You'll face off against undead conquistadors wielding muskets, zombie animal trainers still commanding their wild pets, and creatures called Splitters that presumably do exactly what their name suggests. The goal is to fight through the hordes and reach the airstrip where an evacuation plane waits.
This week's event runs through September 10 and doubles the usual cash and experience rewards, as is expected. GTA+ subscribers get even better payouts at four times the normal rate. Players can jump into the action through their in-game phone or by finding the palm tree marker at Terminal.
Rockstar Games guarantees that everyone who attempts the survival mode will receive an "I Survived Cayo Perico" t-shirt within 72 hours, regardless of performance. More dedicated players who complete all ten waves can earn a Buccaneer Outfit and 100,000 GTA$. There's also a Panther Tour Jacket available just for logging in during the event period.
Beyond the zombie mayhem, this week brings several other earning opportunities. The Kosatka submarine gets a discount on sonar equipment, which helps locate hidden underwater caches that now offer double rewards through September 3. The sonar station itself is 30 percent off, along with guided missile upgrades and the submarine's helicopter and smaller submersible attachments.
Combat enthusiasts can check out the Community Combat Series featuring a circuit board-themed deathmatch that emphasizes close-quarters fighting and rewards headshots. Open Wheel Races return with double payouts for those who can master the racing circuits.
The week's vehicle discounts span multiple categories. Military-style options include the stealth helicopter Annihilator and the armored Insurgent Pick-Up truck. Sports car fans can save on several Dinka models, including both modern and classic Veto variants, while luxury SUV options like the Gallivanter Baller ST also see reduced prices.
