PlayStation users looking to dive into Grand Theft Auto Online's latest mansion update have received an unexpected bonus: they can now play the game without needing an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
The free-to-play period began slightly ahead of schedule, and while unannounced, history suggests it should last approximately two weeks, giving players ample time to explore the new luxury real estate content, officially named "A Safehouse in the Hills."
For anyone unfamiliar with how online gaming works on PlayStation consoles, Sony typically requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription to access multiplayer features in most games. This paid service has multiple tiers, with the basic level costing around $10 a month or $70 annually. It's become somewhat of a barrier for casual players who want to see what else Grand Theft Auto V has to offer beyond the single-player campaign.
However, Rockstar Games and Sony periodically offer promotional periods where this requirement is waived. These free access windows typically coincide with major content updates.
What's interesting about this free play period is that it happened just a day before the update drops and on a day that Rockstar is believed to have initially planned to release it anyway.
As pointed out by @PLTytus on X, "someone at R" was not notified about the delay."
Regardless of whether this is intentional or not, the timing couldn't be better for showcasing what makes GTA Online compelling. The mansions represent some of the most ambitious player properties ever added to the game, with AI assistants, private security, pet kennels, elaborate garages, and extensive customization options. New missions featuring Michael De Santa provide narrative content that connects to the beloved single-player campaign. Finally, the Mission Creator gives players unprecedented ability to craft their own experiences.
For players who haven't played GTA Online in a while or at all, the decision is easy. Even if you can't afford the supposedly absurd mansion prices right away, there's substantial new content to explore. The missions don't require mansion ownership, there are new vehicles to drive, and the Mission Creator will eventually provide virtually unlimited user-generated content to experience.
Two weeks provides more than enough time to relearn how to play GTA Online if you've been away, complete several heists or business operations to start building your bank account, and experience at least some of the new content. For dedicated grinders, two weeks of focused play could potentially generate enough income to make serious progress toward affording a mansion, especially if you're efficient with high-paying activities like the Cayo Perico Heist.
