Grand Theft Auto's subscription service, GTA+, has remained relatively unchanged since its introduction, offering players monthly bonuses, discounts, and access to several classic Rockstar Games titles. But it appears this is about to change soon, and we aren’t talking about a price increase.

According to Rockstar insider @videotechuk_ on X Rockstar recently made backend changes on Steam that could see the introduction of a new GTA+ tier soon, potentially tied to upcoming features related to the company’s expanded modding support.

The discovery comes via updates to the GTA+ package on SteamDB, a website that tracks changes to Steam’s database. The update history showed modifications affecting nine items within the package, specifically the additional games that the subscription service provides access to. While that alone might not seem significant, the nature of the changes raised eyebrows.

Most notably, the Steam package name changed from its standard designation of GTA+ to a more generic identifier: Steam Sub 1456542. However, checking the actual Steam storefront revealed only the single existing GTA+ option, adding to the mystery of what these backend changes might represent.

Ben speculates that this is a sign that Rockstar plans to introduce different reward structures for GTA+, connecting this to Project ROME, an unconfirmed initiative Rockstar is reportedly working on.

Project ROME is nothing but a persistent rumor. According to speculation, it represents Rockstar’s own modding platform, potentially designed to compete with or replace existing community solutions like FiveM.

To understand why a new subscription tier might matter, it helps to know what the current GTA+ service provides. Subscribers receive $500,000 deposited into their Grand Theft Auto Online account each month, along with substantial discounts and bonuses, such as access to The Vinewood Club and a 15% discount on Shark Cards.

Beyond the in-game benefits, GTA+ grants free access to several other Rockstar titles, including the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy - The Definitive Edition and other spin-offs, as well as L.A. Noire and Bully.

The speculation about a connection to Project ROME becomes particularly interesting when you consider Rockstar’s acquisition of CFX.re a few years back and its recent partnership with noPixel.

Subscription services provide predictable income while theoretically delivering ongoing value to subscribers.

If Rockstar is indeed developing ROME as a proprietary modding and multiplayer platform, offering it through a premium subscription tier makes sense. Players who want access to official roleplay servers, enhanced modding capabilities, or other features powered by this new infrastructure might need to subscribe to a higher tier than the current GTA+ offering provides.

For now, nothing has been officially confirmed by Rockstar. The Steam backend changes could represent something entirely different from what speculation suggests, or they might be preparatory work for features still years away from implementation.

Take-Two Interactive’s upcoming earnings call might provide clarity if the company addresses its subscription service plans, but it’ll be interesting to see if that’s indeed the case, as most are expecting Grand Theft Auto 6 news ahead of the game’s release on May 26, 2026.
