> [!INFO] TL;DR Summary

A dataminer has linked an unused character model in the leaked GTA V source files to Rockstar's long-canceled spy game Agent. The character would not have shipped exactly as found, but it is one of the clearest surviving links yet between Agent and material still buried inside Rockstar's later work.

[Rockstar Games](/rockstar-games-f280 "Rockstar Games") has a graveyard of canceled projects. One of them is a ghost story that the community has tried to piece together for over 15 years. The game? _Agent_, and a dataminer may have just found its protagonist hiding inside the [_Grand Theft Auto V_](/grand-theft-auto-v-f2c5 "Grand Theft Auto V") source code.

GTAForums user XanaBax posted a detailed analysis of a character model found within the _GTA V_ source files, originally obtained from the [2023 source code leak](/agent-screenshots-leaked-game-canned-or-restarted-04e0 "Agent Screenshots Leaked"). The model does not match any known NPC or character from _GTA V_ or [_Grand Theft Auto Online_](/gta-online-f419 "GTA Online"), but it does match leaked screenshots from a former Rockstar environment artist's portfolio dating back to 2011.

The main hierarchy node of the character model is labeled "player," and the model is located within a folder codenamed "Jimmy," _Agent's_ internal development name at Rockstar, a Scottish play on "James" as in James Bond, according to former Rockstar technical director [Obbe Vermeij](/obbe-vermeij-495d "Obbe Vermeij").

_Agent_ was announced at Sony's E3 press conference in 2009, described as an open-world spy thriller set during the Cold War. Sam Houser, Rockstar's president, called it "the ultimate action game," while [Take-Two Interactive](/take-two-interactive-eeeb "Take-Two Interactive") billed it as a "genre-defining" title. It was planned as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, which makes sense given the long-time partnership between Sonya nd Rockstar, and then it simply never appeared.

For years, the game remained on Rockstar's website, listed as an upcoming title, until 2021, when Rockstar quietly removed it with its trademark abandoned in November 2018.

[Dan Houser](/dan-houser-5891 "Dan Houser"), Rockstar's co-founder [who left the company in 2020](/dan-houser-co-founder-of-rockstar-games-is-leaving-the-company-eeea "Dan House Leaves Rockstar Games"), finally broke his silence on _Agent_ during his appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast in late 2025, saying that [the whole puzzle never came together](/after-a-decade-of-silence-we-finally-know-what-killed-grand-theft-auto-5s-dlc-73c2 "Why Agent Never Happened"). The fundamental problem, according to Houser, was that the spy thriller genre requires constant tension and a fast pace, but the open-world format that Rockstar excels in just didn't fit.

However, while the project never fully materialized, much of the work on it found its way somewhere else.

The 2023 _GTA V_ source code leak contained numerous references to _Agent_, including files codenamed "Jimmy," and repurposed _GTA Online_ assets, including content [for the Doomsday Heist update](/the-doomsday-heist-ff72 "The Doomsday Heist"), and references to the [canceled "Agent Trevor" single-player DLC](/gta-v-actor-reveals-details-of-canceled-agent-trevordlc-33ba "Canceled Agent Trevor DLC Details") that [Trevor Philips](/trevor-philips-6672 "Trevor Philips") voice actor Steven Ogg confirmed was approximately 50% complete before Rockstar canceled it midway through.

In and of itself, this discovery isn't huge. Taken from a wider perspective, it's massive. Rockstar never really throws away its work. The [scale-down philosophy](/former-rockstar-dev-reveals-development-philosophy-behind-the-success-of-gta-games-e995 "Rockstar's Scale-Down Development Philosophy") that a former audio designer described, where the studio builds everything and then decides what to keep, applies across the studio's entire history. Features built for one game migrate to the next. Nothing at Rockstar is truly lost. It is either shipped, shelved, or absorbed.

![Rockstar does not throw away its work. A dataminer just proved it by finding Agent's protagonist inside GTA V, 15 years after the spy game was canceled.](https://media.gtaboom.com/media/images/1a/07/gta-v-source-code-reveals-ghost-from-rockstar-games-past-2.jpg)

That thought naturally leads to [_Grand Theft Auto 6_](/grand-theft-auto-vi-a428 "Grand Theft Auto VI"), a title that has [spent over a decade in the kitchen](/Former_Rockstar_Developer_Confirms_GTA_6_Development_Timeline "GTA 6 Development Timeline") with a [$3 billion budget](/gta-6-budget-may-be-higher-than-any-movie-ever-made-9a75 "GTA 6 Budget Revealed"). How much of what Rockstar built for canceled or shelved projects, including _Agent_, has found its way into [Vice City](/vice-city-a30a "Vice City")? How many systems that were prototyped for games that never shipped have been refined, repurposed, and integrated into the game launching on [November 19, 2026](/take-two-just-confirmed-gta-6-is-actually-releasing-this-november-39ac "GTA 6 Release Date")? The answer, based on everything we know about how Rockstar operates, is almost certainly "more than anyone outside the studio realizes."

## FAQ

- **Q:** Was this model actually from Agent or just cut GTA V content?
**A:** It is being treated as a likely Agent asset because the model is stored under Jimmy, the internal codename linked to Agent, and it does not match known GTA V or GTA Online characters.
- **Q:** What details tie the character model to Agent?
**A:** The strongest details are the folder name Jimmy, the player label on the main hierarchy node, and the visual match with screenshots from a former Rockstar environment artist's portfolio dating back to 2011.
- **Q:** Why does this discovery matter more than a random cut asset find?
**A:** Because Agent was publicly announced, stayed on Rockstar's slate for years, and is tied to reused ideas inside later Rockstar projects. A likely Agent character model inside GTA V source files points to how Rockstar carried canceled work forward.
