GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One Not Happening

Update: GTA V on the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC has now been officially announced!

If you are looking for a “GTA 5 on PS4 and Xbox One” announcement any time soon then you’re out of luck. It’s not happening.

Speaking recently to MCVUK, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two, had this to say:

The installed base of current generation consoles is estimated to be in excess of 120 million, and most of those consumers have been waiting for Grand Theft Auto V for years. Therefore, we expect there to be enormous consumer demand for Grand Theft Auto V regardless of when the next-generation consoles are released.

Sounds like he doesn’t feel any need to start looking at releasing GTA V on the PS4 and X1 in the near future… Also weighing in on the next-gen issue is Rockstar Games co-founder, Dan Houser himself. Speaking to IGN recently, Houser had this to say:

We don’t feel there are that many limitations [in the Xbox 360]. We feel we can do some very impressive stuff and do it for a large audience.

Houser also said that given the massive install base that current-gen consoles have, it makes sense to concentrate on them (echoing the sentiments of Zelnick).

There’ll be a much larger audience on PS3 than there will be on PS4. At a creative level, which is the most important for us, we could say everything we wanted to say and do everything we wanted to do on these [PS3 and Xbox 360] machines… There’s plenty of power in these machines.

Other than that, Trevor enjoys getting outside in the sunshine!

  1. this is bullcrap man spent worthless money on x1 to be screwed over by rockstar they truely lost a fan to the gta series

  2. I’m not going to keep my Xbox around for one game. I got $120 for my 360, which isn’t bad after playing it non-stop for over five years. Watchdogs, Battlefield 4, and The Elder Scrolls Online will all be available on next gen consoles (ESO will only be next gen and PC).

  3. Seriously, who trades in consoles these days? Is that something that people actually do? We dont really live in the backwards compatible era anymore. I dont know. I trade in my phone for a new one after 2 years, but a console has more value because some games, you just want to take out and play again. To each their own, I guess. GTA FAN said it best… If youre a true fan, you wont complain.

    1. To be honest I think a lot of it comes down to whether you can afford to have multiple consoles lying around the house

  4. Rockstar will be losing money about this. It ain’t that hard to port a game over to the next gen consoles, plus when you do, you’ll still make millions or even more cause everyone will be getting a new console anyway. But It looks like now I won’t be buying it to only play it for two months and get a new console.

    1. They have to build a whole new engine, they can’t just port it to Ps4/Xbox One because it’s an entirely different architecture. The cost of making a Ps4/Xbo ONe version vs the amount of people who will own those consoles does not justify it.

  5. Rockstar really messed up, already sold my old system because I’m getting one of the new ones and I know so many people have already done this. Why would they only release a game for something that is expiring two months after It comes out?

    1. Blackbuster game kept coming on Ps One after hte Ps2 was released. Blockbuster games kept coming on Ps2 when the Ps3 was released. You jsut hasn’t learned your history lesson.

  6. Well they lost some money from me. I am trading in my 360 for the new one and will not pay 60 bucks for a game to play it for 2 months before the new console releases. I am sure there are others in my position and while it may not affect Rock stars sales they will be missing out on the money they could make by simply porting the game to the new consoles.

    1. I couldn’t agree more. There’s no way I am getting this game if it’s not on the next generation of consoles.

      1. I’m not buying the Ps4 until the price drops in november 2014 or something like that. ANyway all the big block buster will be on Ps3 as well

  7. How hard can it be to port it? PS4 and Poobox use a PC architecture. If they end up making a PC version, they should make a PS4 and poopbox port.

  8. Sounds like they need to start working on GTA 6 for next gen now and step up their game! Cause if they have to re-port GTA 5 for ps4 it will most likely be lacking the amazing graphics we expect to see on next gen consoles.
