He added: "I'll be amazed if they didn't because the architecture of technology has advanced significantly since _GTA 5_, which again, easy to forget, that was three generations ago. That was the last one to be released on 360 and PS3."

A game engine is the foundational technology that everything else sits on top of. It is the software that handles how the world is rendered on screen, how physics work, how sound plays, how characters move, how lighting and shadows are calculated, how the game loads its world as you drive through it, and thousands of other technical processes that happen every frame.

When you drive around [Los Santos](/los-santos-efb7 "Los Santos") and see the sun reflect off the ocean or watch a car crumple in a collision, the engine is what makes all of that possible.

Rockstar's engine is called [RAGE](/rage-0d9e "RAGE"), which stands for Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, and debuted in 2006 in _Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis_. Since then, RAGE has powered every major Rockstar release: [_Grand Theft Auto IV_](/grand-theft-auto-4-f19e "Grand Theft Auto 4"), _Red Dead Redemption_, _Max Payne 3_, _L.A. Noire_, _GTA V_, and _RDR2_, and each game used a progressively upgraded version of the engine.

Rockstar has never officially named each version, but it's interesting that Carr says Rockstar didn't just upgrade the engine used for _GTA 6_. Instead, it actually rebuilt it from the ground up. This means that Rockstar took its sweet time rewriting the core systems that everything else depends on, to take advantage of hardware and software capabilities that did not exist when the previous version was written.

Former [Rockstar North](/rockstar-north-caeb "Rockstar North") technical director [Obbe Vermeij](/obbe-vermeij-495d "Obbe Vermeij") explained the rationale behind using an in-house engine, [telling us](/former-gta-technical-director-has-high-praise-for-gta-6-engine-79be "Former Rockstar Dev Defends RAGE Engine for GTA 6") that it gives the studio a level of control over its open-world systems that no off-the-shelf engine can match.

A rebuilt RAGE engine, purpose-built for _GTA 6's_ scale and the current console generation's capabilities, would represent the most significant investment in proprietary game technology that any studio has ever made.
